If you're a fan of noir, American, French, books, movies, authors, actors, this is a great book and resource. It covers all sorts of subjects related to the genre and is fun simply to browse. It includes a fine introduction that does a more than adequate job of introducing the genre, its origins, subjects and, above all, the "tone" or "atmosphere" that defines it. You also will find amongst its disparate articles discussions of the more influential writers and directors and some of the seminal works, both movies and books. One thing I especially liked was the ratings provided by the multiple authors of their favorite novels and movies. It was an interesting and useful guide to a number of works that have faded into obscurity but may still be found if you take the trouble to look.
