Description

Double vinyl LP pressing. 2012 solo release from the Black Crowes frontman and his new gang of musical brothers. In 2011, what began as an experiment without expectations turned into a 118-show journey for Robinson (lead vocals, guitar), Neal Casal (guitar, vocals), Adam MacDougall (keys, vocals), George Sluppick (drums) and Mark Dutton (bass, vocals) that surprised these seasoned pros as music of unshakeable solidity and exuberant reach poured out of them, a New Cosmic California sound with tendrils reaching to the original Fillmore West, Topanga Canyon and outwards towards far horizons. The music of The Chris Robinson Brotherhood finds it's fruition on their studio debut album Big Moon Ritual to be followed by companion album the Magic Door in September.

What a great album. Crows fans are not going to like me saying this, but I like this so much better than anything since Southern Harmony and really maybe ever. Don't get me wrong I think the Crows are great, but I was always drawn to their more laid back arrangements like Thorn in My Pride and Good Friday because they are just so much more dynamic and soulful, than their buzz saw blues stuff. This has that laid back soulful feel with with some truly cosmic rock guitar and keyboard. The negative reviews seem to say that they are ripping off The Grateful Dead, and it does seem to have some of that sensibility, but I think its in part due to Neal Casal's sweet guitar tone and the whole spacey, county, bluesy, folksy thing they have going. Hell, you could compare them to Floyd, The Faces, Traffic, some of the The Band, as you can hear so of those influences as well. In the end The Brotherhood has created something truly original, with some of Chris's best writing to date....There is what your given, what you gave, what you lose, what you gain. There is what must be broken, what must be saved... and whats already gone. Get all the CRB albums you will not regret it.
